If you run a service business with no shopfront, you have probably ticked a long list of towns in your Google Business Profile and then wondered why you still only show up in one of them.
Here is my short answer. The service area setting tells customers where you work, and Google’s own local ranking page does not list it among the things that decide where you appear. Those are two different jobs, and once you separate them, the question of which towns to chase gets a lot easier to answer.

What counts as a service area business?
A service area business is one that goes to the customer instead of the customer coming to you. Google’s definition, on its Business Profile Help page on managing service areas, is a business that “visits or delivers to customers directly but doesn’t serve customers at their business address”, and it gives cleaning services and plumbers as the examples.
You will see this written as SAB in industry posts and forum threads. I will use the plain words from here on.
There is a middle case too. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also travels to them, and Google’s own example is a dine-in restaurant that delivers.
Google adds a condition worth knowing on that same service areas page: if your premises has no permanent on-site signage, it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service area business.
One more line from the service areas page, because people miss it and it causes verification trouble later. If you do not serve customers at your business address, Google asks you to remove that address from the profile entirely.
Service area business or multiple locations? These are different problems
A multi-location business has real premises in several places, so it gets a Google Business Profile and a page per premises. A service area business has one base and drives out from it, so it gets one profile and has to win its towns some other way. This article is about the second case.
The reason I am drawing the line this early is that most advice on “local SEO for multiple locations” quietly assumes the first case. Follow it as a plumber with one van and one yard, and you will end up building twenty profiles that Google’s rules do not allow a service area business to have.

What does the Google service area setting actually do?
Google describes the service area as information for customers, not as a targeting control. The Business Profile Help page on managing service areas puts it in one sentence: “When you set your service area, it helps people find your Business Profile. Your service area shows customers where you can provide your products and services.”
Read that sentence twice, because the two halves do different work. “Helps people find your Business Profile” is a discovery claim, and it is Google’s claim, not mine. “Shows customers where you can provide your products and services” is plainly a display job.
What is not on that page matters just as much. I read the whole thing on 6 August 2026, and the words rank, ranking, results and map pack do not appear in any sentence describing what the setting does.
So set your service areas, and set them honestly. Just do not treat them as the lever that decides where you show up, because Google has never described them that way.
The four limits Google puts on your service areas
Google states four hard limits on the service area setting, and I have not seen a page ranking for this topic that puts all four in one place. Here they are with the wording from Google’s help page on managing service areas beside each one.

Two practical notes from the same page. Edits are reviewed, and Google says approved service area changes may take up to 48 hours to show on your profile.
And if you want to remove all of your service areas, Google requires you to be a storefront business with your address on the profile, so the setting is not simply switched off.
Why twenty service areas does not put you in twenty map packs
Because distance in local results is measured from the person searching to your business, not to your service area. Google’s page on improving your local ranking says local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”, and defines the middle one as “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching”.
Your business sits where it sits. Adding a town to a list on your Google Business Profile does not move it.
The second thing that page does is name what Google says counts, and the service area is not on the list. The three headings are Relevance, Distance and Prominence, and none of them mentions the setting.
That absence is the strongest evidence in this article, and I want to be precise about what it is. It is an observation about a document, not a statement about the algorithm.
Google has not said the service area has no effect on ranking. Google has simply never said it does.
Worth flagging one oddity while you are on that page. The summary line says “relevance, distance, and popularity”, and the three subheadings underneath say Relevance, Distance and Prominence.
Same page, two words for the same factor. It reads like an editing artifact rather than anything meaningful, so I would not build an argument on it.
Run the two-search test on your own town list
Search your service with no town in the query, then search it again with one town added, both signed out. You get two different map packs and two different sets of competitors, and only the second one is a surface you can decide to enter.
The map pack, sometimes called the local pack, is the block of three businesses with the Google Maps panel beside it. Here is what happened when I, Abdullah Nouman, ran the pair on 6 August 2026 in the United States, signed out, with personalization off.
- I searched emergency plumber. Google could not resolve a location, and said so in the bar under the search box: “Can’t determine location”. It still built a map pack, and filled it with Discount Plumbing, Swell Plumbing and Sunset Plumbing of Bend, all in Bend, Oregon.
- In the same browser and the same signed-out session, minutes later, I searched emergency plumber dallas. The whole surface re-formed. The location bar now read “Dallas, TX”, the pack became Metro Flow Plumbing, Public Service Plumbing and Roto-Rooter, and the Google Maps panel redrew on the DFW metro.
The strategic point sits in the gap between those two screens, and it is the reason this article exists.
The first pack is fed by a location signal you do not control and cannot buy. Google says as much on its local ranking page: “If a customer doesn’t share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location.”
My unlocalized search landed in Oregon, which tells you nothing about Oregon and everything about how that signal works.
The second pack is the one you can go after on purpose, because the town is stated in the query rather than guessed. That is why a page on your own site is a different lever from a tick in your service area list, and why the two should never be treated as one system.
Run this pair for every town on your list before you spend anything. It costs you two searches and about a minute per town.
How to sort each town: map-pack reachable, page reachable, or decline
Run the two searches on each town, your service with no town in the query and then your service plus the town name, then put that town into one of three buckets based on what the two results showed you. Match the spend to the bucket, because most owners I talk to are funding all three as though they were the same job.

The decline bucket is the one people resist, and it is usually the one that saves the most money. A town you cannot service profitably in under two hours is not a market you are losing, it is a market you were never in.
What to do in the towns you can reach in the map pack
Work the Google Business Profile itself, because in the towns where proximity is already on your side, the profile is the asset that competes. Google’s own ranking page points at what you can influence: complete and detailed business information, reviews, and how well known the business is.
Here is where I would put the hours.
- Complete the profile properly. Category, services, hours, attributes, photos. Google’s own line is that “businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results”. My Google Business Profile optimization checklist is the version of this I hand to clients.
- Get reviews and answer them. Google states directly that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, which is about as close to a confirmed lever as that page gets.
- Keep your citations consistent. Citations are the directory and data-aggregator listings that carry your name, address and phone number, and they need to match your profile everywhere they appear. Google does not name citations on its ranking page, so treat this as my recommendation rather than Google’s. I wrote up the detail in what should be consistent in a local SEO strategy.
None of this extends your reach into a town two hours away. It makes you the better answer in the towns where you were already a candidate, which is a different and far more winnable goal.
What to do in the towns you can only reach with a page
Build one genuine page for that town on your own site, and treat it as an organic play rather than a map pack play. A web page is not tied to where your van is parked, so it is the lever that still works past the range of your Google Business Profile.
The trap here is obvious and everyone falls in it anyway. Twenty near-identical pages with the town name swapped is a doorway set, it reads as thin to Google and to the reader, and it will not hold.

Credit where it is due on this half of the problem. Sterling Sky’s write-up on service area pages is the best thing on the open web about making these pages good, and it argues from real Search Console data rather than assertion.
What it does not answer is which towns deserve a page at all, which is the question this article is trying to settle first.

What about the towns you cannot reach at all?
You either buy your way into those towns or you let them go, and both are legitimate answers. Organic reach into a town where you have no proximity and no page authority is slow at best, and Local Services Ads exist precisely because Google knows that.
Whether the ads are worth it depends on your margins and your close rate, not on anyone’s blanket verdict. I compared the two side by side in Local Services Ads versus local SEO, including when I would send the budget to each.
What I would not do is keep an unreachable town on your service area list purely so it looks like you cover it. You only get twenty slots, and a slot spent on aspiration is a slot not spent on a town you can actually serve.
So how many towns can a service area business really win?
Honestly, fewer in the map pack than the service area setting implies, and more in organic search than most owners ever try for.
The service area field is a good, useful, customer-facing feature and you should fill it in accurately. My objection is narrow: it is being sold as a targeting control, budgets are being set as though it were one, and Google’s own two help pages, the one on managing service areas and the one on local ranking factors, describe it as something else entirely.
I should be fair about who got here first. Practitioners in the local search forums have been saying the service area is largely a display setting for years, and they are right.
The odd part is that they are right in threads, while the articles ranking above those threads keep describing it as a lever you pull. That gap is what makes this piece worth writing, not any claim that the mechanism was unknown.
If this were my business, I would spend an hour running the two-search test across the whole town list, cut it down to the towns that survive, and move the freed budget into two things: reviews in the towns where proximity already helps me, and one properly built page for each town where it does not.
That is a smaller map than the one on your profile. It is also a map you can defend.
Common questions about service area businesses
Can a service area business have more than one Google Business Profile?
No. Google states that service-area businesses can only have one profile for the whole area that they serve. If you have inherited duplicates from a previous owner or an old listing, sorting those out is a cleanup job rather than a growth tactic.
Does adding more service areas improve my local ranking?
Google’s local ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence, and does not name the service area. Google has not said it makes no difference either, so the honest answer is that it is not described as a ranking input anywhere Google publishes. Set your areas accurately, then treat ranking as a separate job.
How many city pages should a service area business build?
As many as you can make genuinely different and genuinely useful, which for most small operators is a handful rather than twenty. One strong page per town you actively want work in beats a set of templated pages with the name swapped.
Should a service area business hide its address when the owner works from home?
Yes, if customers are not served there. Google’s instruction is direct: if you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove your address from your Business Profile. Leaving a home address visible when nobody visits it creates verification problems and tells customers something that is not true.
