If your Google Business Profile is suspended, almost every page you open will send you to the reinstatement form. That form is the right place to end up, but for a lot of owners it does nothing at all until something else is cleared first, and nothing on the page warns you about that.
So here is the order I would work in: find out what Google actually did to you, find out whether customers can still see you, then file the correct appeal in the correct place.

What does it mean when Google says your Business Profile is suspended?
A suspension means Google has decided your profile breaks one of its guidelines and has either taken away your ability to manage the listing or removed the listing from Search and Maps. You get it back by fixing what broke the guideline, gathering documents that show the business is real, and filing an appeal through the Google Business Profile appeals tool.
That much is settled, and every page ranking for this search says a version of it. What is not settled is what your particular suspension is called, and that turns out to decide where you file.
Google’s overview of Business Profile policies names four different states, and they are not interchangeable.

The policy page lists “Disabled profile” and “Suspended profile” as two separate items, and gives each one its own “learn how to fix” link.
I checked where both links go on August 13, 2026. The suspended one points at support.google.com/business/answer/4569145. The disabled one points at answer/9334246, which redirects into answer/4569145 as well.
So Google names two states and then sends both of them to one article, titled “Fix suspended or disabled profiles”, and that article never tells you which one you have. Because Google never separates them, the local SEO industry invented its own words for the difference, and those words cause a problem of their own.
Are “soft suspension” and “hard suspension” Google’s words?
No, Google does not use either phrase on any of its Business Profile help pages. Your suspension notice will say suspended, or disabled, or that your account has been restricted, so if you are hunting for the word “soft” in your email, you will not find it.
The two labels are an industry shorthand, and they are genuinely useful, because they describe what the owner can see:
- Soft suspension is the shorthand for the listing still being visible on Search and Maps while you have lost the ability to manage it. Nothing about your day-to-day phone calls changes, so this one is survivable.
- Hard suspension is the shorthand for the listing being gone from Search and Maps entirely. This is the expensive one, because you are losing calls from the moment it happens.
The shorthand is not wrong. The trouble is that Google’s words and the industry’s words are describing two different things, so you cannot match one to the other, and a lot of owners lose an afternoon trying.
Google’s words describe why it acted. Disabled is what you get when Google believes the business does not exist where you say it does, and suspended is what you get when, for example, you set a P.O. Box as your address. An account restriction is aimed at your Google Account rather than at any single listing.
The industry’s words describe what you can see. Soft and hard only tell you whether the public can still find the listing, which is a completely different question from why Google acted.
So the two do not line up. A P.O. Box address usually takes the listing off the map, which most people would call a hard suspension, and Google’s own word for that exact case is suspended.
Use the shorthand if it helps you think, then set it aside before you go near a form. Work from the two things your notice actually says: which state Google put you in, and which policy it linked to.
Does your notice say deceptive content, policy violation, or suspicious activity?
Those three phrases are among the most searched wordings around this problem, and none of them appears anywhere in Google’s Business Profile policy documentation. I searched the full text of all four Google help pages on August 13, 2026, with every collapsed section expanded, and got zero matches for “deceptive”, “policy violation” and “suspicious”.

What Google does publish, on the policy page, is a named list of sixteen situations. Ten of them are reasons access is taken away or a profile is not eligible:
- Account-level, and these three send you to the account appeal first: Google Account not in good standing; Account restricted from Business Profile activity; Profile suspension due to other Google product account restriction.
- Eligibility and identity, which is where most document requests come from: Ineligible businesses; Business does not exist; P.O. Box address; Identity change; Location change.
- Access, which is a different problem from a guideline breach: Unauthorized profile access; Inactive owner.
The other six explain why a submitted edit gets rejected rather than why you lost the profile, and they include the deleted, disabled and suspended states in the table above.
The practical instruction is short. Read your notice against that list of sixteen, not against a soft or hard label and not against a phrase from a blog post, because the list is the only vocabulary Google’s own systems use.
Can customers still find your business while the profile is suspended?
A suspended profile is sometimes still visible to the public, and you can find out which case you are in without opening a single form. Open a private or incognito window so you are signed out of Google, search your business name plus your city, then search the same thing on Google Maps.
The check to run before you file anything
- Open a private or incognito window, so you are not signed in to the account that manages the profile
- Search your exact business name plus your city on Google
- Search the same thing on Google Maps, so you are not judging it on one surface
- Listing still there: you have lost management access, not customers, so build the appeal properly
- Listing gone from both: you are losing calls today, so the appeal goes in today
Sign out properly for this, because a signed-in view is not a customer’s view, and seeing what a customer sees is the entire point of the check.
Google spells out one case where the listing stays up and a person loses access instead. Under “What happens when a profile is removed?”, Google says that when a manager’s Google Account is suspended, “We suspend the manager on the accounts that they manage. It doesn’t affect the locations.”
That matters if an agency or a former employee holds access to your listing. The listing itself can be completely healthy while the person who normally edits it is locked out, and in that case the appeal has to come from that person’s Google Account rather than from your profile.
A missing Google review works the same way. What you notice is the review, and the account that has to file the fix often belongs to somebody else, which I went through in the post on why a Google review stops showing up.
Which Google appeal do you file first, the account one or the profile one?
If your Google Account itself is restricted, you appeal the account first at myaccount.google.com/restrictions, and only once that restriction is lifted does a Business Profile appeal do anything. In that situation there are two appeals, they live at two different URLs, and the order is not optional.
Google states this plainly on its Fix suspended or disabled profiles page:
“Your account may be restricted when you violate our policy. As a result of an account restriction, the Business Profiles you manage are suspended and you won’t be able to create or claim other profiles.”
“To lift the restriction, you can provide a reason and submit an appeal for your account on your My accounts page.”
“Once the account restriction is lifted, to remove the Business Profile suspension, you can submit an appeal for your Business Profile.”
Google repeats it on its page about appealing profile restrictions: “If your Google Account or Business Profile is restricted, it must be reinstated before you can appeal any content decisions.”
Here is why one sentence gets a whole section. If the block is at account level and you file in the profile appeals tool, you have appealed a profile whose problem is somewhere else entirely.
So you wait, nothing happens, and the reflex on day six is to file a second appeal, which Google explicitly asks you not to do.
The sequence that works is this:
- Check your account status first. Open myaccount.google.com/restrictions. If there is a restriction sitting there, that is your first appeal, and Google lets you track its status on the same page.
- Wait for the account restriction to lift. Nothing you file about the profile counts until it does, because Google rejects content and appeals coming from a restricted account.
- Then file the profile appeal in the Business Profile appeals tool, with the evidence matched to the cause rather than a generic pile of documents.
If there is nothing on your restrictions page, skip straight to step three, because the account appeal only exists when Google has restricted the account.
One caution about where you file, because the top of this search page gets it wrong. Google’s own AI Overview for “google business profile suspended” tells you to “Access the Google Business Profile Management dashboard, follow the prompts on your suspended listing, and upload your gathered evidence”, and it credits that step to a YouTube video.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
A profile almost always gets suspended because something on it stopped matching Google’s guidelines for representing your business, and the name and the address are the two things Google writes the most rules about. Google’s instruction is short: “Reflect your business accurately.”
The business name catches a lot of owners out, because the extra words feel like marketing rather than a violation. Keyword stuffing in the name is the version everyone has heard of, and Google publishes a table of exactly what is not allowed, with its own examples:

On addresses, Google is equally specific, and these are the lines that catch service businesses run from home or from a shared desk:
- P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes. “P.O. boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations aren’t acceptable.” This is the case Google names as producing a suspended profile.
- Virtual offices. If you rent a mailing address but do not work from it, Google says “that location isn’t eligible for a Business Profile”.
- Co-working desks. Allowed only if the office “maintains clear signage, receives customers at the location during business hours, and is staffed during business hours by your business staff”.
- Signage. Businesses showing an address are expected to “maintain permanent fixed signage” of the business name at that address, which is what the photo request in an appeal is usually about.
Service area is the one where I would be careful, because the version other pages quote has dropped the softening words Google put in. Google writes that the service area “shouldn’t extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based”, and then adds, in the same paragraph, “For some businesses, larger service areas may be appropriate.”
The AI Overview on this search drops both of those softening words and states it as a straight cause of suspension: “Setting service-area ranges wider than a 2-hour drive.” Google says “about” two hours, and Google says larger areas are sometimes fine, so going past two hours is not an automatic suspension.

Then there are the edits that put a profile back into review. Changing the name, the address, the phone number or the primary category all change something Google already verified, so any of them can trigger a fresh check.
What fails that check is a mismatch, where the profile says one thing and your website or your business registration says another. Keeping your name, address and phone number identical everywhere is dull work, and it is the part that stops the same mismatch triggering another review, which I covered in the post on keeping a local SEO setup consistent.
Why would Google suspend a profile that follows the rules?
Google suspends compliant-looking profiles for two reasons that are worth separating. Either something you consider fine does break a written guideline, which is common with business names and virtual addresses, or somebody reported your listing and an automated system acted on the report.
Google built the reporting route on purpose. Anyone can propose a change to your listing through “Suggest an Edit” on Google Maps, and Google’s policy page says it uses “information from different sources such as user reports and licensed content”. That is as far as the documentation goes.
Past that point, Google has never published how many reports it takes, or which reports count for more, so everything written about it is somebody’s informed guess.
Olly Olly, whose page ranks near the top of this search and is written by a former Google Business Profile support specialist, says that if enough users flag your business, “or just one high-trust user”, then “Google may suspend it automatically”.
I could not find that threshold in any Google document, so treat it as one experienced person’s read rather than a published rule.
Some categories also draw more scrutiny than others, and the ones the local SEO industry names most often are locksmiths, garage door repair and personal injury law, all of which have a long history of fake listings. If you are in one of those, expect the evidence bar on your appeal to feel higher than a bakery’s.
None of it changes what you do next, though. You still have to show that the business is real and follows the guidelines, because that is the only thing the person reviewing your appeal looks at.
What evidence does a Business Profile appeal need, and how long does a decision take?
Google asks for documents that prove the business exists and operates where you say it does, and it names the examples itself: official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills for the business such as electricity, phone, water or internet. Google documents that “Appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days”.
Three details about the process are easy to miss, and missing any of them costs you time:
- You get 60 minutes on the evidence form. Google’s wording is direct: “Once you open the evidence form, you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won’t be attached to your appeal.” Scan and rename your documents before you open it, not after.
- Google lists five appeal statuses. They are Submitted, Approved, Not Approved, Can’t be appealed, and Eligible for appeal. “Can’t be appealed” is a different situation from a refusal, so read which one you have before you resubmit anything.
- A refusal is not necessarily the end. Google says that “Only if your reinstatement request is denied, we may be able to do an additional review”, through a separate appeals form. That form is not the one you started in.
On timing, I am going to give you the disagreement rather than a number, because the sources genuinely conflict. Google documents up to five business days. Olly Olly, on the same search page, says appeals “usually take 1 to 3 weeks” and sometimes longer. Stellaractive says most reinstatement requests take under two weeks.
None of the three publishes how many cases that is based on, and we have not run enough reinstatements ourselves to settle it, so I am not going to average three assertions and hand you the result as a fact. Plan for the possibility of weeks rather than days, and do not read day six as a rejection.
The one instruction Google does document about waiting is the one nobody repeats: “Do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision.”
Should you create a second Business Profile while the appeal is under review?
No, and Google says so directly: “Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review.” It is also the first thing a lot of owners do, because a missing listing feels like something you can rebuild in twenty minutes.
What you actually build is a duplicate. Google’s guidelines allow only one profile per business, and a profile treated as a duplicate will not show on Google Search or Maps either, so you end up with two invisible listings and a merge to sort out on top of the original appeal.
Google’s instruction only covers the period while an appeal is running, though, so a blanket “never create a new profile” is wrong in one documented case.
If your business changes its name and does not meet Google’s rebranding criteria, Google says “it’s considered a new business”, and that you “must mark the existing Business Profile as closed and then create a new Business Profile with your new business name”. That is a planned move you make when you are not suspended, which is a different situation entirely.
Once you are reinstated, go back over the profile properly rather than just restoring what was there. So what should you do first when your Business Profile is suspended?
Run two checks before you fill in anything. Search your business name plus your city in a signed-out window, on Google and then on Google Maps, so you know whether you have lost editing access or lost customers. Then open myaccount.google.com/restrictions, because that one page decides whether the profile appeals tool can help you at all.
Honestly, those ten minutes are worth more than a fast submission, and they are the part almost every guide on this topic skips.
My bigger complaint is with the advice around suspensions rather than with Google’s enforcement. Google names four states, then publishes a single article that fixes all of them without ever telling you which one you have.
The industry filled that gap with soft and hard, which describe something real but do not match Google’s words. So owners turn up at the form believing the wrong thing about their own case, and file in the wrong place.
Work out which state you are in, clear the account restriction first if there is one, then file the profile appeal. The rest of the job is gathering paperwork.

Do your Google reviews disappear when a profile is suspended?
Google says that when a profile is removed, “The public can’t go to the profile”, so the reviews sitting on it are not reachable either. Google also documents that reinstating a profile restores the profile along with its owner and managers, so the usual outcome of a successful appeal is that everything comes back together.
Can you still get a suspended profile back if you bought the business from someone else?
Yes, and buying the business is the case where your evidence matters most, because the registration and licenses in your name are what show the business is now yours. Gather those documents in the current legal name before you open the evidence form, since you only get 60 minutes once it is open.
Does a suspended Business Profile affect your website’s rankings?
Your website’s normal search listings are a separate system and do not disappear with the profile. The local map results and the profile box beside them do disappear, which is where a nearby customer would normally find your phone number, so treat a suspension as urgent even when the site still ranks normally.
