Every AI visibility tool sells you a number: a score, a share of voice, a citation count. The question nobody in the category answers plainly is where that number came from, and whether the tool checked anything to produce it.
This is not a ranked list of the best AI visibility tools, because I have not run controlled accuracy tests on any of them and neither has anyone else who published one. It is four checks to run before you buy, then a shortlist of six tools with their published prices, so you can see what you actually get for the money.

- SE Ranking says it plainly on its own page: there is no benchmark yet for what a good AI visibility score is.
- The score is not the work. It is there to point you at the actual AI answers your buyers are reading, and the value is in opening those answers.
What is an AI visibility tool, and what does it actually track?
An AI visibility tool tracks how often and in what context your brand, product or website gets mentioned, recommended or cited inside AI answers, across engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. In practice it does that by running a list of prompts on a schedule and recording three things: whether you were named, how you were described, and which sites the answer pulled from.
Google’s own AI Overview on that query defines it the same way, near enough word for word. Captured 9 August 2026, signed out, it reads: “AI visibility tools (also known as Answer Engine Optimization or GEO tools) track how often, how, and in what context your brand, product, or website is cited by large language models and AI search engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.”
The names you will meet over and over are Profound, Otterly.ai, Peec AI, Scrunch, AthenaHQ, Rankability, Semrush, SE Ranking, Frase, Surfer SEO, Writesonic and ZipTie. The metrics they compete on are prompt tracking, citation tracking, share of voice, sentiment, competitor benchmarking and brand mentions.
None of that is controversial and I am not arguing with it. The question I want to ask is about the step underneath: how a tool turns “we asked ChatGPT some things” into a number you are supposed to act on.
Who wrote the “best AI visibility tools” lists on page one?
Mostly, the companies that sell AI visibility tools wrote the page-one lists. I ran the search on 9 August 2026, signed out, and counted eight organic results: Zapier, Frase, Profound, Marketer Milk, Position Digital, SE Ranking, Backlinko and Analyze AI.
Five of those eight have a direct commercial interest in which tool wins. Four sell a product in the category (Frase, Profound, SE Ranking and Analyze AI), and the fifth, Backlinko, is owned by Semrush and its snippet recommends the Semrush toolkit.
Three of them list their own product first inside their own comparison, and you can read that off the snippets without clicking anything.
Frase’s comparison snippet reads “The ten tools we compare are Frase, Profound, Peec AI, Semrush AI Toolkit, Athena, SE Ranking…”, and Profound’s reads “The 18 best AI visibility tools for marketing agencies. 1. Profound. 2. Scrunch. 3. Otterly…”. Further down the page, Analyze AI’s “We Tested 8 AI Visibility Optimization Tools” opens with “1. Analyze AI”.
The Backlinko one is worth naming carefully, because it is the least obvious. Backlinko’s post says “The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is the fastest way to see how your brand shows up across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity”, and Semrush has owned Backlinko since January 2022, which Semrush announced itself. Nothing on the results page tells you that.
I want to be fair here, because the easy version of this point is wrong. A vendor listing itself first is not fraud, and some of those roundups are written by people who have genuinely used the tools, which is more than I can say.
Those rankings are still not independent, so read them that way. The AI Overview at the top of the page is built from the same set of sites: its sources panel on that capture listed SE Ranking, Zapier, Frase, Analyze AI, Flint and YouTube.
What are practitioners saying that the buying guides are not?
Working SEOs are saying that nobody has solved the measurement problem underneath AI visibility tools yet. On the same results page, below every buying guide, Google put a discussion carousel, and the sharpest line on the page was in it.
Peter Rota, labeled by Google as a Technical SEO expert, with 90 or more reactions on a two-day-old LinkedIn post: “AI visibility tools are giving you rankings that don’t actually exist.”
Beside him, a popular comment in r/digital_marketing: “I am tracking this for a client with just Semrush’s AI visibility score for now. Its probably not the most…”. That is a practitioner using a tool, paying for it, and hedging about it in public.
So that results page splits into two groups. The buying advice comes from companies that sell these tools, and the caution comes from the people who pay to use them.
Google ranked the sellers at the top of the page and put the users in a carousel further down.
The four checks to run before you buy an AI visibility tool
Each of the four checks below asks a vendor to show that its tool observed something, instead of repeating back a setting you typed into it. Three of the four come from watching our own measurement setup fail. I sell no tool in this category, so our own failures are the only ones I can show you in full.
Check 1. Did the tool prove which market it checked, or echo your setting?
Ask the vendor how the tool confirms which country an answer came from, and what it records when the search engine will not confirm one. A country dropdown proves the tool asked for that country, and it does not prove the search engine gave it one.
Here is our own failure, because it is the cleanest example I have. On 9 August 2026 our capture setup reported the search below as a United States result. Google’s own footer on that exact page said otherwise.
We caught that by opening the screenshot and reading the footer, which took about four seconds and which no dashboard will do for you.
This matters more than it sounds, because the answer really does change by country. We found differences between the United States and United Kingdom versions of the same AI Overview while working out how often AI Overviews appear. So when Google cannot place the search, a country label on that result is not telling you about that country.
Check 2. How often does the tool sample, and does it tell you the answer moves?
Ask how many times a day the tool asks the engine each prompt, and whether the dashboard shows you the range of answers or only an average. A tool that asks once a day is showing you one answer out of several the engine could have given, because AI answers change between asks.
On 1 August 2026 we ran one query, in one market, three times within a few minutes, with nothing edited in between. The opening sentence, the sub-headings and the cited sources differed on each of the three, and one of them carried a “Limitations and Challenges” section the other two did not.
The limits of that are worth stating out loud, since this is exactly the kind of thing that gets turned into a statistic it cannot support. Three runs, one query, one night, no control group. That tells you the answers move around. It does not tell you how often they move, so I am not putting a percentage next to it.
The useful part is that a vendor’s answer to this check is easy to verify against their pricing page. If the plan caps you at 50 prompts a month and the tool runs each one daily, you now know the size of the sample behind your score.
Check 3. Does the tool read the whole sources panel, or only the part that loaded?
Ask whether the tool keeps scrolling the AI Overview’s sources panel until no new sources load, and what it reports when it cannot finish. A tool that stops scrolling early counts fewer citations than you really have, and nothing on the screen tells you it stopped early.
Our own citation reader only accepts a list after it opens the AI Overview and scrolls the sources panel until nothing new appears. On 8 August 2026 that same reader handled one query’s overview completely and came back with nothing at all on another, because the second one showed its sources in a horizontal carousel instead of a vertical panel.
Same tool, same night, two page layouts, and on the second one the count came back as zero with no error message. If a layout change can take a reader from a full list to nothing without anything looking broken, then “we track citations” only describes the case where the page is built the way the tool expects.
You meet the same problem from the other direction when you are working out why your page is not cited in AI Overviews. A citation the tool missed and a citation you never earned both show up as zero, and the chart cannot tell you which one you are looking at.
Check 4. Is a mention being counted as a recommendation?
Ask whether the visibility score separates being named somewhere in an answer from being the thing the answer tells the reader to choose. Being mentioned in passing and being recommended are worth very different amounts of money, and a single blended “visibility” score usually counts them as the same thing.
You can see both in the same answer on the page we have been looking at. The AI Overview defines the category, then offers “a quick look at the top options available for monitoring brand presence in AI search tools” and starts naming them.
A tool named in that definition and a tool named in that shortlist both register as a mention, and only one of them is being sold to the reader.
SE Ranking does part of this by counting mentions that carry a link separately from mentions that do not, which is a real and useful distinction. Counting a link is still not the same as recording whether the answer told the reader to pick you.
What do the vendors’ own methodology pages actually say?
Profound and SE Ranking both publish more about their own measurement method than I expected, and each documents a different part of it. I read both pages first-hand on 9 August 2026, and everything below is the vendor’s own published claim rather than anything I have tested.
Profound answers check 2 directly, and does it before being asked: “AI platforms don’t return the same answer twice. We run every tracked prompt daily so your visibility score reflects your true average across all responses.”
Profound also says it reads the AI tools through a normal browser window rather than through the API, which is the direct programming connection most software uses. Its wording is “Other tools pull AI responses from the API. We capture directly from the browser”.
Its FAQ puts the prompt caps in writing at 50 on Starter and 100 on Growth. Profound writes those as monthly figures while also saying every tracked prompt runs daily, so ask which of the two it means before you compare that 50 against Peec AI’s 50.
On countries Profound claims “30+ languages and 150+ regions”, without saying how it confirms which region an answer came from. That leaves check 1 open.
SE Ranking documents a different part. On how it collects answers, its page says “SE Ranking’s AI Search Toolkit retrieves results through direct UI-based monitoring. It sends queries to AI platforms and captures the responses as a real user would see them.”
On countries SE Ranking commits to a number, “7 supported markets” and five languages, which is a much smaller claim than 150 regions and a much easier one for you to check. Its sampling frequency is not on that page at all; it is on the pricing page, which lists “100 prompts to track daily” on the entry plan.
That is worth noting as a habit rather than a complaint. Prompt limits get published because they are what you are billed on, not because the vendor set out to document its method, so the answer to check 2 often sits on the pricing page.
The most useful sentence I read all week is also on SE Ranking’s page, answering what a good AI visibility score is: “There’s no benchmark yet as AI search is too new for the industry.” A vendor admitting its own main number has nothing to compare against is more useful to a buyer than a competitor’s ranked list.
That is the second vendor telling me the API answers and the customer answers are not the same, which is worth knowing if you were planning to check any of this yourself with a script.
What does a good vendor answer to each check look like?
A good vendor answer to each of the four checks names a method and a number, and a weak answer describes a feature and moves on. Here is what to listen for on a demo call, question by question.

Which AI visibility tools are worth shortlisting?
Six AI visibility tools are worth your time: Otterly.ai, Peec AI, AthenaHQ and Profound if you want a dedicated tracker, and SE Ranking or Semrush if you would rather switch on AI tracking inside an SEO platform you may already be paying for.
That shortlist rests on three things I can show you and one I cannot. I counted which tools keep reappearing across the competing comparisons on page one, I read each vendor’s own published method, and I read every price below on the vendor’s own pricing page on 9 August 2026.
What I have not done is test any of them against a known correct answer. So this is a shortlist to go and check, not a ranking, and the four checks above are how you check it.
I said those page-one lists are not independent, and they are not. What a compromised list can still do is vouch for a competitor, because naming a rival you do not own costs the author something, while naming yourself costs nothing.
So I threw away every case of a vendor listing itself and kept only the cross-references. All six clear that test. Profound appears on Frase’s, Marketer Milk’s and Analyze AI’s lists; Peec AI on Frase’s, Profound’s, Marketer Milk’s and Position Digital’s; AthenaHQ on Frase’s, Profound’s and Zapier’s; Otterly.ai on Frase’s and Profound’s; and Frase’s own comparison names both SE Ranking and Semrush, neither of which it owns.

The number that jumped out at me is the one in the SE Ranking row. At $129 a month you get 100 prompts tracked daily and a full SEO platform, while Otterly’s own 100-prompt tier is $189 a month for the AI tracking on its own.
That is not a knock on Otterly, which includes API and MCP access at that tier and claims far more countries, a number check 1 tells you to test rather than trust. It is a straight warning that AI-only pricing and suite pricing are not comparable on features alone, and on the two suites I priced the suite won on prompts per dollar.
So check what you already pay for first. I priced two SEO platforms here, Semrush and SE Ranking, and both include AI visibility tracking on the plans above, so a second subscription may buy you a second dashboard rather than more information.
Here is how I would match the six to a situation:
- Spending nothing yet: start on AthenaHQ’s free tier, because 300 AI responses is enough to answer the only question that matters at this stage, which is whether you show up at all.
- Small budget, real tracking: Otterly.ai at $29 gives you 15 prompts tracked daily across four engines, and daily is the part that matters, since a weekly check on an answer that moves is close to useless.
- AI tracking only, no SEO suite needed: Peec AI at $95 for 50 daily prompts, and it is the one most often named by people who do not sell it.
- You also need rank tracking, audits and keyword research: SE Ranking at $129, which carries the most prompts per dollar on this list and saves you a second tool.
- Already paying for Semrush: open the AI visibility features you have before you buy anything, then decide whether 50 daily prompts is enough for your prompt set.
- Enterprise, multiple markets, needs a procurement conversation: Profound, and use the demo to ask all four checks rather than watching the dashboard tour.
How to check an AI visibility tool yourself in about ten minutes
You can run all four checks with one prompt, a browser and about ten minutes, and you do not need our setup for any of it. Steps 1, 2 and 5 work before you spend anything; steps 3 and 4 compare the tool against your own count, so open a trial first.
- Run the query yourself, signed out, and screenshot it. Then scroll to the very bottom and read Google’s location line. If it says it cannot determine your location, any country label on that result is a guess, including yours.
- Run the same prompt three times in five minutes. Compare the opening sentence and the cited sources across the three. If the three differ, you have just seen the variation that a once-a-day sample never shows you.
- Open the AI Overview’s sources panel and scroll it until nothing new loads. Count what you see, then compare that against what the tool reports for the same query on the same day.
- Read one full answer and mark it up. Note where your brand is named in passing and where it is actually recommended, then find out which of those two the dashboard counted.
- Ask the vendor the five questions in the table above, in writing. How specific the reply is tells you as much as the answers do, and you keep the reply.
If the tool’s number and your own count agree, buy it with more confidence than the reviews could ever give you. If they disagree, you have a specific question to put to the vendor, with your own screenshots behind it.
My own walk-away line is this. If the tool’s citation count for a query you checked by hand is out by more than one either way, that is not rounding, and I would not buy until the vendor can explain the gap. A tool that cannot match a count you did in ten minutes is not going to get the harder questions right.
Are free AI visibility tools worth using?
Free AI visibility tools are worth using for a one-off spot check, and they will not do the job of a paid tracker, because a free tier usually gives you a single snapshot rather than a schedule. Three are worth knowing about, and they are free in different ways.
- AthenaHQ’s Essential tier is the most generous of the three, since 300 AI responses is a real sample rather than one lookup, and it covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude.
- SE Ranking’s checker on its own product page gives five checks a day against up to five competitors, which is useful because it shows your rivals’ numbers next to your own, and a score on its own tells you nothing.
- Semrush’s free AI visibility checker is a quick look at one domain, and it is the fastest way to find out whether you are absent, which is the only finding a snapshot can honestly support.
The limit matters more here than in most software categories. The whole reason to pay for one of these is repeated sampling over time, and a single free snapshot is exactly the one-off reading that check 2 warns you about.
So use a free checker to find out whether you appear at all, and to build the shortlist of prompts you would pay to track. Just do not report its output to anyone as a trend.
So which AI visibility tool should you buy?
If this were my money and I needed one tool today, I would take SE Ranking at $129, because 100 prompts tracked daily plus a full SEO platform is more measurement per dollar than anything else on the list, and because it publishes both its market count and its sampling frequency where I can read them.
If I wanted AI tracking on its own, with nothing else attached, I would take Peec AI, and if I were spending my own money on a side project I would start free on AthenaHQ and move to Otterly.ai at $29 once I knew which prompts were worth watching.
The general rule underneath those picks is simple. Between two tools at a similar price, take the one that publishes more of its method, even when the published method sounds worse. A vendor that writes down “100 prompts, run daily, seven markets” has given you numbers you can hold it to, and a vendor claiming continuous monitoring across 150 regions has given you nothing you can check.
And if you are choosing whether to buy one at all, buy one. The category is young and the measurement underneath it is genuinely unsettled, but not measuring is worse than measuring imperfectly, and being absent from AI answers is a real commercial problem that will not fix itself while you wait for the tooling to mature.
What I would push back on hardest is treating the score itself as the work. The score is there to point you at the actual AI answers your buyers are reading, and the teams I have seen get value out of these tools are the ones who open those answers and read them. Copying the score into a monthly slide and stopping there wastes the subscription.

There is no independently tested best AI visibility tool right now, because nobody has published a controlled accuracy test against a known correct answer, including us. On published method and price per tracked prompt, SE Ranking at $129 a month is the one I would reach for first, with Peec AI at $95 if you want AI tracking on its own.
How much do AI visibility tools cost?
Entry plans ran from $29 to $295 a month when I checked on 9 August 2026: Otterly.ai $29, Peec AI $95, SE Ranking $129, Semrush $199 and AthenaHQ $295, with AthenaHQ also offering a free tier and Profound quoting by demo. What is a good AI visibility score?
There is no industry benchmark, and SE Ranking says so on its own product page. The only reading that means anything today is your score against your named competitors, on the same prompts, sampled the same way, over time.
Does my SEO tool already track AI visibility?
Probably, if you pay for a major platform. SE Ranking includes 100 daily prompts on its $129 plan and Semrush includes 50 on its $199 plan, so check your current tier before you add a second subscription. If the prompt allowance is too small for your list, that is the moment a dedicated tracker starts to make sense.
How do you increase AI visibility?
Two things have to be true about your page. Your answer has to be easy for an AI to pull out in one piece, so answer the question within 2 to 3 lines directly under the heading that asks it, and other trusted sources have to back up the factual part of what you say, so an AI is safe quoting you. Do AI visibility tools track ChatGPT as well as Google?
The serious tools do, and they name the engines in writing. Profound lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek; SE Ranking lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Check that list against the engines your buyers actually use, and watch for engines sold as paid add-ons rather than included.
Does adding schema or statistics get you cited more often?
Schema and statistics help less than the pitch suggests. We pressure-tested the statistics claim in do statistics improve AI citations, and the honest answer is that most of the numbers circulating trace back to a single paper rather than to repeated evidence.
